On the hills above the Auckland Waterfront, the picturesque suburb of Parnell is one of Auckland’s prime gallery and café enclaves. Parnell Rise climbs the ridge beside the Auckland Domain, its long stretch of street-front galleries, cafes and boutique designer stores shielding hidden alleyways which open unexpectedly onto small brick-paved courtyards. Parnell’s village character is enhanced by the area’s heritage buildings, including St Mary’s Anglican Church and Trinity Cathedral, Ewelme Cottage and Kinder House, which are located near the crest of the Hill. Parnell’s art scene is celebrated on the second Thursday of every month with ‘Late Night Art’, when galleries stay open till 7.30pm to offer a kaleidoscope of exhibitions, talks and live music by local artists. Down the Hill on St Georges Bay Rd, La Cigale French Style Market is open in the mornings every weekend for freshly baked pastries, coffee, breads, cheeses, preserves and fresh fruit and vegetables.
