Hanmer Springs

Autumn and spring are almost picture perfect in an alpine village like Hanmer Springs.  The exotic trees which are a feature of the settlement parade a palate of colour quite at contrast with the barren hills which surround the Hanmer Plain.  At 385 metres above sea-level, Hanmer Springs sits enfolded by the surrounding hills, their peaks snow-tipped through winter and spring.  The thermal springs are the town’s biggest attraction, with an on-site spa for that special treat.  But the surrounding countryside is so inviting, the air so pure and invigorating, it won’t be long before you’re out exploring.  The Hanmer Forest Conservation Park (130 sq kms), contains not only native bush, but also some of New Zealand’s oldest exotic plantings.  Walking, tramping and mountain biking tracks criss-cross the Park,  like the popular Conical Hill Walkway, which affords extensive views of the Hanmer Basin and the encircling mountains.  Adventurers have plenty of options on the Waiau River, from bungy jumping from the historic Waiau Ferry Bridge, to quad-biking, jet boating, canyoning, rafting, motorbike safaris and horse treks, and skiers can check out the slopes at the Hanmer Springs and Mt Lyford ski fields.  Hanmer Springs is the central key point of the Alpine Pacific Triangle, a touring route popular for its varied landscape and alluring attractions.
