Whitianga is located on the inner reaches of the deep-water harbour of Mercury Bay. Its early life as a timber port and shipbuilding centre has morphed into a far more urbane persona. The charms of bygone days have largely disappeared, and the squat concrete block buildings which predominate in the town centre are slowly being replaced by more stylish up-market facades. Numerous big game fishing trips and scenic boat tours to Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve leave from Whitianga Wharf, as does the passenger ferry which plies the narrow crossing to Ferry Landing. Within easy walking distance from Ferry Landing are the Whitianga Rock Scenic and Historical Reserve, Shakespeare’s Lookout and Flaxmill Bay, where you’ll find the quirky Eggsentric Café and Restaurant, which features live music and poetry during the summer, art exhibitions and sculpture symposiums, and free pick-up at night from the ferry. The iconic kiwi beaches, Hahei, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, are a 30-40 minute drive south of Whitianga, while driving north will take you to the equally beautiful but less crowded Opito and Otama Beaches, and Kuaotunu Bay, where you can hire bikes and kayaks. The annual Scallop Festival, held here every August, celebrates the bounty of the local waters, and features live jazz and blues, scallop cooking demonstrations and cook-offs.
