Day trip to Cape Palliser
Cape Palliser, the southernmost point of the North Island, is punctuated by the candy-striped Cape Palliser Lighthouse.
From Martinborough, the road crosses the plains to the shores of Palliser Bay, then follows the surreal coastline south past Ngawi,
where ancient tractors stand like sentinels on the beach, waiting to haul local fishing vessels from the sea.
Near the Cape, the road is more like a track, but once there you can park the car and climb to the lighthouse for fabulous views.
Nearby, keep an eye out for the North Island’s largest permanent colony of fur seals.
