RIVERSONG BED AND BREAKFAST, WANAKA
Hosts : Ann and Ian Horrax
There’s nothing like relaxing into the comforts of home after a day spent exploring New Zealand’s fabulous southern lakes region. The Riversong B&B, which sits beside the Clutha River, 6km from Wanaka town centre, and close to the southern end of the Hawea River walking/cycling Track, fits the bill to perfection. Peaceful, and set in flower-filled gardens
Relax in the peaceful garden, it’s obvious that hosts Ann and Ian Horrax love this beautiful property. Its book
Book lined wall in breakfast room-lined walls speak of Ann and Ian’s wide reading tastes, and of hours spent enjoying this place of sunshine and tranquility.
Here, a sense of intimacy and charm pervades. Upstairs, the king/twin guest room
Upstairs king/twin guest room, with private bathroom, has views of the River and the surrounding mountains, and a small deck where guests can soak up the afternoon rays of sunshine with a book and a thirst-quenching drink. It’s a chance not to be missed for the foot-sore and weary. Downstairs, the ensuite
Downstairs queen guest room queen guest room opens directly onto a broad verandah, which flows onto the garden and across to the river
View from the front verandah towards the river. Two lounge
Garden lounge areas face either the river or the carefully tended gardens. Here guests can interact, swap stories and plan their next outing. While Ann’s love of gardening is obvious to all who visit, Ian’s passion is fishing. He knows all the best trout fishing spots, guiding local fishing trips, and offering advice on the best spotz to visit further afield. When breakfast time rolls around, Ann’s delicious cooked and continental breakfasts leave little space for the home baked treats displayed temptingly on the table. Her cooking skills are the exclamation mark with which you’ll remember a cosy and convivial sojourn.
Heritage Village Chalet
Groups visiting Wanaka (especially during the ski season) should definitely consider staying at Ann and Ian’s 4 bedroom
Main bedroom downstairs chalet at the Heritage Village Country Retreat. This modern, semi-detached home is part of an extensive complex featuring on-site tennis courts and a gym, spa and sauna centre. Situated mid-way between the Treble Cone and Cardrona Ski fields, just off the Crown Range Road, it’s a convenient 3km drive from Wanaka’s town centre. Upstairs, two rooms, one queen and one twin, share a bathroom featuring a spa bath and separate shower, while downstairs, there’s an ensuite queen room with garden views and a second twin room. The lounge and dining
Chalet dining area sections of its huge living area are warmed by a cosy and efficient double-sided gas fireplace. It’s the perfect place to mingle and socialize. The 8 seat square table is the inevitable setting for tasty dinners prepared in the adjacent fully equipped kitchen, or on the barbeque just outside the door. Meanwhile, the secure heated ski locker will be drying all that ski gear, ready for tomorrow’s challenges.
