Right in the heart of Franz Josef Village, café music and relaxed conversation forms a lively counterpoint to the constant stream of helicopter arrivals and departures across the road. It’s a place to sit and enjoy the buzz, re-living the experiences of the day and re-counting tales over a hot chocolate or a glass of beer. With the mountains at its back, and the Glacier in sight, Franz Josef Village’s exhuberant ambience matches the mood of those who have explored its frozen playground. At 12 kms in length, Franz Josef Glacier is a little smaller than its neighbour the Fox, and seems eminently more friendly with its plush mantle of rainforest lining the approach road. Walks lead through the bush towards the glacier’s terminal face, with several splendid vantage points along the way. The morraine at the glacier’s feet spans the broad glacial valley, the icy waters of the Waiho River spilling forth to tumble over its bedrock base on its 19km journey to the sea. As with the Fox, tours equip and guide visitors onto the ice, some exploring the blue ice caves or challenging the adventurous with ice climbing and sky diving options. More about the West Coast
