Heading north from Westport on SH67 is not a common route unless your destination is the Kahurangi National Park. That’s part of its appeal. Karamea boasts a subtropical microclimate that is the envy of the West Coast, and the road north passes a feast of native flora silhouetted against the backdrop of the Tasman Sea. The beautiful Karamea Bluff Ecological Area has one of the best stands of mature matai to be seen in the area, with short walks directly from SH67. Long stretches of unspoiled beaches line this coast, but their beauty is tempered by the unrelenting power of their waves. These beaches are great for walking, but if you wish to swim, please check with locals about danger spots, and be sure to take plenty of insect repellent with you – hoards of sand-flies love the West Coast too. More about the West Coast.
